Why society will be forced to become less complex In the past few chapters on Energy Economics, Peak Cheap Oil, and the false promise of Shale Oil, we've gone into great detail to show how our economic growth is deeply dependent on our energy systems. Here’s how it all sums up. There are some knowns: We know that energy is required for both growth and complexity. We know that surplus energy is shrinking. We know that the age of cheap oil is over. And we know that because of this oil costs will consume an ever-greater proportion of our total budget. And with these known facts, come along specific risks. There is the risk that our exponential money system will cease to operate in a world of declining energy surplus. It is designed for a world without limits – a world of endless gro...

Chapter 17b - Energy Budgeting (1 of 2): Petroleum has supplied the surplus energy that has allowed for social complexity, industrialization, and the modern conveniences that we enjoy. In this chapter, Dr. Chris Martenson explains that in the future our supply of surplus energy will decline due to the fact that increasing amounts of energy will be required to produce new energy. When poor net energy (ERoEI) returns are paired with peak oil production, it points to a return to a less complex society. http://www.chrismartenson.com

There is the risk that our exponential money system will cease to operate in a world of declining energy surplus. It is designed for a world without limits – a world of endless growth. And there is the risk that our society will be forced to become less complex - a loaded statement if ever there was one. Each one of these known facts adds to each one of the stated risks and that is what The Crash Course is about: assessing those risks and deciding what, if anything, a prudent adult should do about adapting to these realities and facing these risks. Putting these together, the predictions in video below become so easy to make they don't feel like predictions at all; just inevitable facts.

The dwelling is being built in Brütten, and by springtime it will be ready to house nine families. The construction of a self-sufficient house poses the engineering challenge of balancing tenant energy requirements with the amount of energy that the building can produce. To overcome this hurdle, the House of the Future minimises both energy consumption and energy loss, and has its roof and facade covered with energy-efficient solar panels. Once completed, only LED lights will be used, and all household appliances will comply with the latest energy consumption standards. The engineering company behind the project estimates that only one hour of sunlight will be sufficient to power the entire building for 24 hours. To ensure that surplus energy is available during bad weather days, a power-to-gas plant, which converts solar energy into hydrogen, has been integrated into the house. When insufficient energy is produced from sunlight alone, a fuel cell will use the hydrogen to generate the needed electricity. --- swissinfo.ch is the international branch of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).
